This is a telegraph key that was used in the 1920s in the Powell River telegraph office, which was located in the Townsite near the mill.
A telegraph key is the part of a telegraph which the operator uses to tap out a message. In the early twentieth century, few houses had their own telephones, so the telegraph was the only way to convey messages quickly over long distances.
