Saltery Bay Log Stamp

Log Stamp X63 – this is a steel stamp for timber on lot 2091 at Saltery Bay.  It became pre-empted around 1900.  The bar at the bottom indicates Crown Land and that royalties would be reduced.  A rare stamp indeed and it is still valid.  To be held in trust at the P.R. Museum.

A log stamp hammer is used to make end marks on lumber and logs. These end marks are much like cattle brands. End marks and bark marks (cut with an axe) are symbols of identification and ownership. As such, the log marks were often registered.
